Same-sex Kisses in Classic Films
Romantic and sexual kisses between people of the same sex really didn’t exist in classic film with the only example I can find being Mädchen in Uniform. Women typically kissed in classic films as a sign of friendship or if they were family while men kissed for comedic effect or before death.
Gluck: Who Did She Think He Was?
‘In the 1920s clothing choices did not signify a particular kind of sexual identity. The high fashion of the time called for a boyish look for fashionable women. These women had all the telltale signs of female masculinity, the monocle, the cigarette holder and the hands in the pocket. It’s not just about the boyish look, it’s also about the stance, the bodily stance.’
The line ‘Which is the Rooster? Which is the Hen? is from Irving Kaufman’s 1926 song “Masculine Women! Feminine Men!“
